Motility test

Inoculation of the broth tube required us to use aseptic technique once again to transfer our unknown and environmental bacteria to a broth tube that was .4% medium agar nutrient. The inoculation process was the same however we used an inoculating needle instead of a loop and we also simply inserted the needle into the broth, and we were sure not to mix the broth and the bacteria after inoculating. The reason we were inoculating our broth tubes was to determine the motility of our bacteria. Some bacteria have flagella which are used to swim through substances. We were curious to see if our bacteria were motile or not.

The results of the broth samples indicated no motility for both our environmental and unknown. The site where we punctured the inoculating tube into the agar did not develop a clouded area, instead the bacteria just grew along the stabbed area. However, both samples were producing gas, indicated by air bubbles within the broth.
